The Greater Manchester STEM team, in collaboration with the University of Manchester (UoM), hosted the first Raspberry Pi CPD/networking event for teachers on Monday 15th October, at the Museum of Science and Industry.
Ms Amanda Banks (CAS, Manchester Hub Leader) and Dr Andrew Robinson (the brains behind Pi Face) from UoM, along with a team of enthusiastic students, facilitated the session. Providing the equipment and the expertise, they delivered a truly engaging event that left the teachers hungry for more Pi!
The twilight event attracted 25 teachers from secondary schools across Greater Manchester. All teachers had the chance to get to grips with Raspberry Pi / Pi Face, and develop an understanding of Scratch and Python programming languages, as well as appreciation for the applications of Raspberry Pi in cross curricular activities.
Teachers also had the opportunity to interact with STEM Ambassadors, working in computer programming/software development industries, willing to further support Raspberry Pi activities in their schools. Even the charismatic Pete Lomas (Co-founder of the Raspberry Pi Foundation) made a special guest appearance to show his support!
The evening was a great success; as a result of the massive demand (it reached capacity in the course of an afternoon!) a second event is now planned for early November 2012.
